The Science
Human Amniotic Membrane
A naturally occurring tissue with inherent structural and biological characteristics well suited for ocular surface applications.
The amniotic membrane is the innermost layer of the placenta — a thin, highly compact extracellular matrix constituted of collagen fibers (predominantly Types I, III, IV and V), along with ECM proteins including laminin, fibronectin, proteoglycans, and hyaluronic acid, plus numerous growth factors and cytokines.
The elasticity and durability of the amniotic membrane allows it to conform closely to complex ocular surface anatomy while maintaining its function as a protective barrier — supporting tissue repair and the body’s natural healing process following ocular intervention.
